11 Killed in Fatal Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Plunge

LAGOS, NIGERIA – A devastating traffic accident on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway has claimed the lives of 11 people after a passenger vehicle veered off a bridge and plunged into the ravine below. The incident occurred during the early morning hours, sending shockwaves through the local commuting community.

The accident involved a high-capacity commercial bus traveling toward Abeokuta. According to preliminary reports from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the driver lost control of the vehicle while navigating a section of the expressway notorious for its narrow bridges and aging infrastructure.

The accident resulted in a high death toll, with emergency responders confirming that 11 passengers, including both men and women, died at the scene. A few survivors were rescued from the wreckage but suffered critical injuries and were rushed to state hospitals for emergency surgery. Recovery efforts were intensive, as local residents and first responders spent hours extricating victims from the mangled vehicle, which was partially submerged after the fall.

Highway authorities are scrutinizing several factors as the official investigation into the accident continues. Investigators are currently examining reports of mechanical failure, specifically whether a tire burst or brake failure occurred just before the vehicle impacted the bridge railings.

Excessive speed is also being considered, as witness accounts suggest the driver was unable to regain control once the vehicle began to swerve. Furthermore, long-standing infrastructure concerns regarding the deteriorating state of the bridge railings have been raised, as they failed to prevent the vehicle from plummeting over the edge.

The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway remains one of the busiest and most dangerous arterial roads in the region. This latest tragedy has reignited calls for the Federal Ministry of Works to expedite repairs on critical bridge sections and for stricter enforcement of speed limits by road safety officials.

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their lives today," said a spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). "This is a grim reminder of the vital need for both vehicle maintenance and cautious driving on our highways."

The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.
