2 New Jersey Residents Potentially Exposed to Hantavirus, Health Officials Say

the New Jersey Department of Health announced that it is closely monitoring two residents who may have been exposed to hantavirus after contact with an individual who was infected upon returning from the MV Hondius cruise ship. Notably, the New Jersey residents were not passengers on the ship; rather, they had traveled on the same plane as the infected individual abroad.

Health Commissioner Dr. Raynard Washington stated that while neither resident shows symptoms suggestive of hantavirus, the situation is being treated with caution. "At this time, the risk to the general public in New Jersey remains very low," he emphasized, noting the absence of current hantavirus cases within the state.

The MV Hondius cruise, which has been linked to a hantavirus outbreak, has seen three deaths among its passengers, and several individuals are being monitored for potential infections. The strain associated with this outbreak, Andes virus, is notably the only hantavirus variant known to transmit between humans, though such occurrences are rare and typically require prolonged, close contact.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has labeled the situation as a "level 3" threat, they reiterated that the overall risk to the public remains minimal. The CDC is facilitating the safe return of American passengers from the ship to a quarantine facility in Nebraska.

Health officials across several states are coordinating with local agencies to ensure that those possibly exposed are tracked, monitored, and educated regarding hantavirus symptoms. The condition usually manifests with flu-like symptoms within four to 42 days after exposure, and there are no international travel restrictions currently in place.

In light of this situation, health authorities are urging vigilance among the public, particularly for people in close contact with potentially exposed individuals. As the monitoring continues, state officials remain committed to ensuring public safety and health amid ongoing concerns about infectious diseases.
