EASTERN SAMAR, Philippines — A powerful magnitude 6.1 earthquake rattled the province of Eastern Samar on Monday afternoon, May 4, 2026, sending residents into the streets and prompting state seismologists to warn of potential damages and aftershocks.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the tectonic tremor occurred at 2:09 p.m. local time on May 4, 2026. The epicenter was located approximately 9 kilometers northwest of the town of San Julian, with a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
The 6.1-magnitude earthquake was felt at varying strengths throughout Eastern Visayas and as far as the Bicol Region. According to PHIVOLCS, Intensity V (Strong) was recorded in Can-Avid, Dulag, Alangalang, and Gandara, while Intensity IV (Moderately Strong) tremors hit Abuyog, Palo, and Carigara. Areas including Ormoc, Baybay, Tacloban, and Sorsogon experienced Intensity III (Weak), and Intensity II (Slightly Felt) was noted in parts of Cebu, Masbate, and Northern Samar.
Local disaster risk reduction and management offices (LDRRMOs) in San Julian and neighboring towns immediately began conducting rapid damage assessments. While no immediate casualties have been reported, authorities are inspecting government buildings, schools, and critical infrastructure for structural cracks.
Residents in the affected areas described a "jolting" sensation that lasted for several seconds. In San Julian, many workers and students evacuated buildings as a precautionary measure.
PHIVOLCS has advised the public to remain vigilant. While the quake was tectonic in origin and did not trigger a tsunami warning, state seismologists emphasize that aftershocks are expected in the coming hours and days.
"We are advising the public to inspect their homes and workplaces for any visible damage before re-entering," a local official stated. "Please stay calm but stay informed through official government channels."
