A Mother’s Grief: The 80-Year-Old Woman Who Lost Three Children in Benue’s Latest Bloodshed

BENUE STATE, Nigeria – The silence in the small agrarian community of Apa is now punctuated only by the sound of smoldering timber and the muffled sobs of survivors. Among them sits Mama Agnes, an 80-year-old grandmother whose life was irrevocably shattered during a brutal dawn raid by armed herdsmen on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

In a single hour of violence, Mama Agnes lost three of her adult children. She now sits on a low wooden stool amidst the charred remains of her family compound—the sole witness to the decimation of her legacy.

The attack began at approximately 4:30 a.m. local time, according to local residents. Armed men moved through the village with tactical precision, utilizing a combination of high-caliber firearms and petrol bombs. While many fled into the nearby bush, the elderly and those attempting to protect their homes were caught in the crossfire.

By the time the sun rose, 11 residents were confirmed dead, and over a dozen homes had been reduced to ash.

Recounting the horror with a steady, haunting gaze, Mama Agnes described the moment the attackers reached her doorstep.

"I told my children to run, but they stayed to pull me out of the back. They were my hands and my feet in my old age," she whispered in a voice strained by smoke. "The men came with fire and guns. I watched my two sons fall in the yard. My daughter... she did not make it out of the house before they set the thatch ablaze."

For Mama Agnes, the loss is not just emotional but existential. In a region where children are the primary social security for the elderly, she now faces an uncertain future with neither a home nor a family to provide for her.

Benue State has long been the epicenter of the "Middle Belt" conflict, a complex struggle over land and resources between nomadic herders and sedentary farmers. Despite numerous peace accords and increased military presence, fresh attacks continue to plague the "Food Basket of the Nation."

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the casualty count and stated that additional tactical units have been deployed to the area to prevent reprisal attacks. However, for the people of Apa, the intervention feels tragically late.

Beyond the rising death toll, a deepening displacement crisis has left over 150 villagers seeking refuge in neighboring primary schools. The destruction of significant grain stores in the fires has sparked urgent fears of a localized food shortage, compounding the community's suffering. In response, local leaders are renewing calls for a permanent military outpost in the corridor to provide a consistent deterrent against future incursions.

As Mama Agnes sifts through the grey ash where her home once stood, her grief serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of a conflict that remains stubbornly unresolved. "I have lived 80 years to see this," she said, looking at the fresh mounds of earth being dug for her children. "There is no more sun in my sky."
