Trials of the Ajax armoured vehicles, manufactured by General Dynamics in Merthyr Tydfil, are resuming after being paused last November due to health concerns among soldiers. Approximately 30 personnel suffered from illnesses thought to be caused by excessive noise and vibration during testing, leading to symptoms such as vomiting and temporary hearing loss.
Defence Minister Luke Pollard confirmed the resumption of trials, stating that investigations identified a combination of issues contributing to the soldiers' health problems, including technical glitches, variability in training conditions, cold exposure, and air quality within the vehicles. However, he reassured that the symptoms experienced were typically temporary, and all affected personnel have since returned to normal duties.
Pollard emphasized the importance of proceeding cautiously, with the Ajax trials now set to restart in a phased manner. The first phase will include limited trials under strictly controlled conditions to ensure both the safety of soldiers and the effectiveness of the vehicles. "We aspire to deliver a vehicle into service that is effective on the battlefield and works for our soldiers," Pollard remarked.
The Ajax programme, valued at approximately £6.3 billion, has experienced extensive delays since its initial contract in 2014. The announcement to restart trials comes after significant pressure from MPs to protect jobs associated with the vehicles amidst ongoing safety uncertainties.
Pollard acknowledged the previous challenges faced by the Ajax vehicles, stating that their user experience "has not been good enough" and committing to strict new controls that prioritize soldier safety and comfort. General Dynamics welcomed the decision, reaffirming its commitment to working alongside the Ministry of Defence to ensure that the upgraded Ajax vehicles meet operational standards and begin fulfilling their intended purpose on the battlefield.
Despite the cautious optimism surrounding the resume of trials, many remain concerned about the vehicle's long-term viability and the lingering safety issues associated with its operation. As the military moves forward, restoring confidence in the Ajax system remains a paramount goal.
