Stay Free Alberta, the leading separatist organization in Alberta, has announced that it has accumulated sufficient signatures to instigate a referendum regarding the province's separation from Canada. The group claimed to have recorded hundreds of thousands of signatures, significantly exceeding the required 178,000.

Mitch Sylvestre, head of Stay Free Alberta, confirmed the plans to file the petition with Elections Alberta's office in Edmonton. The group began collecting signatures in January and believes it met its goal well before the deadline, which was extended due to the weekend.

Jeffrey Rath, the group's lawyer, emphasized that Premier Danielle Smith would be compelled to acknowledge the overwhelming interest from Albertans, as many lined up in chilly winter conditions to participate. Rath expressed confidence that their efforts would lead to a province-wide vote in October, should the signatures be verified.

However, the petition is not without complications. A recent court ruling issued a month-long stay on the signature validation process, pending legal challenges from several First Nations groups arguing that the petition breaches treaty rights. Despite these hurdles, Rath noted that they had adequately fulfilled the legal requirements and do not expect the ongoing litigation to hinder their momentum.

Alberta's political landscape has been increasingly charged regarding the topic of secession, with historical sentiments of Western alienation playing a significant role in the current push for independence. Experts highlight that while many Albertans desire a better relationship with the federal government, the separatist movement reflects a profound discontent with how the province has been treated over the years.
