Ambush in Sistan-Baluchestan: Three Police Officers Killed in Brazen Daytime Attack in Southeast Iran

ZAHEDAN, IRAN – The restive province of Sistan-Baluchestan is under a heightened security alert today following a deadly ambush that claimed the lives of three Iranian police officers. The daytime attack, characterized by its clinical precision, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing friction between state security forces and militant groups operating along the southeastern border.

The incident occurred late Tuesday morning, April 14, 2026 on a highway connecting the provincial capital, Zahedan, to the city of Khash. According to witnesses and preliminary police reports, the officers were conducting a routine patrol when their vehicle was intercepted by two SUVs carrying masked gunmen.

The assailants opened fire with automatic weapons, focusing their barrage on the patrol car's engine and passenger cabin. The officers—two lieutenants and a sergeant—reportedly died at the scene. The gunmen successfully seized the officers' service weapons and communication gear before speeding off toward the mountainous terrain bordering Pakistan.

Immediately following the shooting, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and local police units established checkpoints across the Khash-Zahedan axis.

In the wake of the attack, security forces have implemented a comprehensive response, deploying surveillance drones and attack helicopters to patrol the rugged border corridors. On the ground, a strict lockdown is in effect, with all secondary roads leading toward the frontier closed to civilian traffic to facilitate maneuvers.

Simultaneously, intelligence units have conducted targeted raids, reportedly detaining several suspects for questioning regarding their potential role in providing logistical support to the gunmen.

Sistan-Baluchestan has long been the site of low-level insurgency and cross-border smuggling. The province, which is predominantly Sunni in a Shia-majority country, has faced decades of economic marginalization, fueling local grievances.

While no group has officially claimed responsibility for this specific ambush, Iranian officials have frequently pointed the finger at Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni militant group that Iranian authorities claim receives support from foreign intelligence agencies.

The Provincial Governor issued a stern statement, vowing that the blood of the "martyred" officers would not go unavenged. "The enemies of the Islamic Republic seek to destabilize our borders," the statement read. "Our response will be decisive, swift, and felt across the frontier."

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has also reached out to Pakistani authorities, urging increased cooperation to prevent militants from using the neighboring territory as a "safe haven" for launching cross-border strikes.
