Australia is set to finalize an upgraded security treaty with Fiji, known as the Vuvale Union, as officials move to bolster their strategic foothold in the Pacific region. The announcement comes amid concerns over China's increasing influence in neighboring countries, particularly following China's efforts to establish a military presence in the region.

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong and Pacific Island Affairs Minister Pat Conroy arrived in Suva for high-level discussions aimed at solidifying the treaty. In their statement, they stressed the importance of shared interests in achieving a peaceful and prosperous region, with Wong noting that the Vuvale Union represents a transformative agreement that will enhance cooperation between Australia and Fiji.

Australia has increased its focus on security in the Pacific, especially after the Solomon Islands signed a pact with China. In light of the ongoing Iran war, discussions around fuel security were also on the agenda, with Fiji's critical role as a supply and storage hub highlighted.
