BASTI, UTTAR PRADESH – In a chilling incident that has left the region in shock, an 11-year-old boy was allegedly thrown into a burning tandoor (clay oven) during a wedding ceremony in Basti. The brutal act was reportedly triggered by the child eating "too many" rasgullas at the dessert counter.
The incident occurred late on Wednesday night, April 15, 2026 in Malauli Gosai village. The victim, identified as Chaman (also known as Amar), was attending a relative's wedding with his maternal grandmother.
According to eyewitnesses, a catering manager grew increasingly agitated after noticing the boy repeatedly taking rasgullas from the food stall. Following a heated verbal exchange, the manager allegedly lost his temper, picked up the child, and threw him toward the searing heat of the open tandoor.
Hearing the boy's agonizing screams, family members and guests rushed to the catering area and pulled him from the flames. However, the damage was already significant. Chaman sustained severe burns stretching from his face down to his waist.
He was initially rushed to Ayodhya Medical College but was later referred to the Lucknow Medical College due to the severity of his injuries. Medical staff have stated that while his condition is currently stable, the path to recovery will be long and painful.
The local police have officially registered a case of attempted murder (under Section 109(1) of the BNS) following a formal complaint by the boy’s uncle.
"This is a heinous crime against a minor. We have formed special teams to track down the catering contractor and the individuals involved," stated Circle Officer Swanima Singh.
The accused fled the scene immediately after the incident and remains at large. Authorities have begun conducting raids across the district and in neighboring Gonda to apprehend the suspect.
The incident has sparked outrage across Uttar Pradesh, with many calling for the strictest possible punishment for the perpetrator. Advocacy groups are highlighting the incident as a grim reminder of the vulnerability of children in unregulated work and social environments.
