Beirut Suburbs Rocked: Senior Hezbollah Radwan Commander Reported Killed in Israeli Strike

BEIRUT, Lebanon — An Israeli airstrike targeted a high-rise building in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, reportedly killing a senior operations commander of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force. The strike, the first to hit the Lebanese capital in nearly a month, has significantly strained a fragile, U.S.-brokered ceasefire that took effect in mid-April.

The attack focused on the Haret Hreik neighborhood, a densely populated residential area and a known Hezbollah stronghold. Witnesses reported a massive explosion that leveled half of a 10-story building located adjacent to a local school.

The strike successfully targeted Malek Ballout, also known as Malek Balou, who served as the operations commander for Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force. Security sources reported that the missile struck an apartment building while high-level leaders of the Radwan Force were reportedly conducting a meeting.

As of late Wednesday, at least one person has been confirmed dead, with emergency teams continuing search-and-rescue operations beneath the building's rubble.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed they ordered the strike. Netanyahu stated the operation was a direct response to Radwan Force activities, including the targeting of Israeli settlements and military personnel.

"No terrorist has immunity; the long arm of Israel will reach every enemy and murderer," Netanyahu declared in a joint statement following the operation.

The strike marks a notable shift in the conflict. While Israel and Hezbollah have continued to exchange fire in southern Lebanon despite the April 17 truce, the capital had been largely spared since early April. The assassination took place during a day of widespread violence across Lebanon. In Southern Lebanon, strikes in the town of Saksakiyeh killed four people and wounded 33 others, including six children and four women.

Additional strikes in the Bekaa Valley of Eastern Lebanon contributed to a nationwide daily death toll of at least 12 people. Since major hostilities resumed in early March 2026 following the killing of Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the total toll has surpassed 2,700 deaths and over one million people displaced within the country.

The attack has cast a shadow over diplomatic efforts. It comes just as U.S. President Donald Trump suggested there was a "very good chance" of reaching a broader peace agreement with Iran. However, the return to precision strikes in Beirut suggests that the "Yellow Line" of regional deterrence remains extremely volatile.
