MANILA, Philippines — A massive residential fire tore through the Maisan area at the corner of Cabildo and Anda Streets in Intramuros on Wednesday afternoon of February 25, 2026, forcing hundreds to flee and prompting an aggressive firefighting response, authorities said.

The blaze was first reported around 5:01 p.m., with thick smoke seen billowing over the historic district as flames spread rapidly through closely built homes made of light materials. Fire crews quickly raised the alert to the fourth alarm, calling in additional units to contain the inferno amid narrow streets and challenging access.

Residents scrambled to evacuate as the fire engulfed houses, with many grabbing children, pets and essential belongings before escaping the raging flames. The intense blaze raged for more than six hours before it was declared under control after late evening operations.

Tragically, at least two senior citizens were killed during the fire, officials confirmed. Local police have taken into custody a suspect believed to have sparked the fire — an ex-convict who allegedly set his own home ablaze in a fit of jealousy, police reports and witnesses said. The blaze then spread uncontrollably to neighboring residences.

Roughly 600 families were displaced by the fire, with hundreds of homes destroyed or damaged, and initial damage estimates reaching around ₱1.5 million. Residents were moved to temporary shelters, including the Delpan Sports Complex, while relief operations — such as hot meals and emergency supplies — were organized by local authorities and community volunteers.

Firefighters faced multiple challenges during the operation, including limited water supply and the densely packed conditions of the neighborhood, which hindered quick suppression efforts.

Municipal officials assured the public that they are coordinating further investigations into the fire’s cause, supporting affected families, and continuing damage assessments. Authorities also urged residents and passersby to stay clear of the affected streets to permit ongoing response and recovery work.
