Bloodshed on the Brink: Russian Strikes Kill 22 Hours Before Proposed Ceasefire

KYIV — A wave of Russian missile and drone strikes tore through Ukrainian cities on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, killing at least 22 people and wounding more than 80 others. The surge in violence came just hours before a unilateral ceasefire proposed by Kyiv was set to begin at midnight, highlighting the deep mistrust and lethal volatility currently defining the four-year-old conflict.

The strikes targeted several major urban centers in rapid succession, transforming a day intended for diplomatic signaling into a period of deep mourning. In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, which endured the heaviest toll, at least 12 people were killed after powerful blasts destroyed residential buildings, a car repair shop, and a car wash, according to Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov.

To the east in Kramatorsk, three Russian glide bombs struck the city center, claiming the lives of five civilians; President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue. Meanwhile, an overnight strike in Poltava targeting gas production facilities killed five people, with officials reporting a lethal "double-tap" missile strike that hit the site while emergency responders were already on the scene battling the initial blaze.

The violence erupted during a disjointed series of truce announcements surrounding the 81st anniversary of Victory Day. President Zelenskyy proposed an open-ended ceasefire starting at midnight on May 5, framing it as a genuine step toward peace that prioritizes human life over historical anniversaries. In contrast, Russia suggested a traditional pause from May 8 to May 9 for Victory Day celebrations; though this proposal was coupled with warnings of "massive strikes" should the period be disrupted.

President Zelenskyy slammed Moscow’s actions as "utter cynicism," arguing that Russia’s declaration of a truce later in the week was a hollow gesture. "Russia could cease fire at any moment, and this would stop the war," Zelenskyy posted on X. "Peace is needed, and real steps are needed to achieve it. Ukraine will act in kind."

The escalation occurs as the front lines remain largely stalemated, though Ukraine has recently stepped up its own long-range drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. In a rare bit of battlefield data, Ukrainian officials claimed they regained roughly 120 square kilometers of territory in April—their first net gain in over two years.

However, Tuesday’s bloodshed serves as a grim reminder that despite talk of "silence regimes," the sky over Ukraine remains a theater of unrelenting destruction. As the clock struck midnight and Kyiv’s proposed ceasefire officially began, the world waited to see if the guns would finally fall silent, or if the "silence" would be broken yet again by the sound of sirens.

"It is time for Russian leaders to take real steps to end their war, especially since Russia’s Defense Ministry believes it cannot hold a parade in Moscow without Ukraine’s goodwill." — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
