Breach at the Capitol: Masked Driver Ploughs Through Delhi Assembly Gates

NEW DELHI — A high-stakes security breach sent the Delhi Legislative Assembly into a total lockdown on Monday afternoon, April 6, 2026, after a masked man in a white SUV rammed through the complex’s VVIP entrance. The audacious incursion, which occurred around 2:00 PM, has exposed significant lapses in the multi-layered security protocols of the national capital’s high-security zone.

The intruder, driving a white Tata Sierra with Uttar Pradesh registration, forcefully breached Gate No. 2, shattering the iron gates and a boom barrier before speeding toward the heart of the legislative complex.

In a turn of events that has baffled investigators; the driver did not immediately flee after the crash. Instead, he proceeded directly to the office of Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta.

According to CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts, the masked intruder stepped from the vehicle to calmly place a flower bouquet near the Speaker’s car before reversing at high speed through the damaged gates to escape. The entire episode lasted approximately five minutes, prompting an immediate response from the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS). After a thorough inspection, authorities confirmed that the bouquet contained no explosives or hazardous materials.

The breach triggered an immediate city-wide alert, involving the Delhi Police Special Cell and the Crime Branch. Within two hours of the incident, authorities traced the vehicle to North Delhi.

Authorities have currently detained Sarbjit Singh, the registered owner of the vehicle, for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. Alongside the primary suspect, a total of three individuals, including the driver, have been taken into custody. Meanwhile, the white Tata Sierra has been seized by police and is undergoing thorough forensic analysis to gather further evidence.

The incident has raised uncomfortable questions for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Delhi Police units stationed at the gate. Despite the loud impact of the initial ramming, the suspect was able to navigate the interior of the complex and exit through the same point of entry without being neutralized.

The breach comes on the heels of recent bomb threats received by the Assembly during the last Budget session, heightening fears of a coordinated pattern of intimidation. Speaker Vijender Gupta has called for an immediate high-level review of the Assembly’s security apparatus.

"This is not just a traffic violation; it is a direct challenge to the sanctity of our democratic institutions," a senior official stated. "How a vehicle could spend five minutes inside a high-security zone and escape through the same gate is something that requires an urgent, transparent investigation."

As of Monday evening, the Delhi Assembly remains under heavy CRPF guard, with all non-essential entry points welded shut pending a full structural and security audit.
