NEW DELHI – A prominent criminal lawyer was shot dead in broad daylight on Saturday morning, April 11, during his routine walk in a high-security residential area. While the assailants managed to flee the scene on foot, the entire brutal encounter and a botched getaway attempt were captured in chilling detail by local CCTV cameras.
The victim, identified as 52-year-old Vikram Singh, was a well-known figure in the local courts, handling several high-stakes litigation cases. The attack occurred at approximately 6:15 a.m. near a public park where Singh was a daily regular.
According to the CCTV footage recovered by investigators, two helmeted men on a black motorcycle approached Singh from behind. After a brief, heated exchange, one of the men produced a semi-automatic pistol and fired three shots at close range.
The drama took a mechanical turn when the shooters attempted to speed away. The footage shows the driver frantically kicking the motorcycle's starter as the engine repeatedly sputtered and failed. Panic-stricken as witnesses began to emerge from nearby houses, the duo was forced to abandon the vehicle and the murder weapon in a nearby alley, disappearing into a maze of narrow residential lanes on foot.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Anjali Sharma confirmed that the abandoned motorcycle has been traced to a stolen vehicle report filed three days ago.
"We have clear facial recognition data from several angles before the suspects donned their helmets," DCP Sharma stated. "The mechanical failure of their vehicle has provided us with significant forensic evidence, including fingerprints and the discarded weapon. We are exploring all angles, including professional rivalry and recent cases handled by Mr. Singh."
The brazen nature of the killing has sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity. The local Bar Association has called for an emergency meeting and is demanding increased security for legal professionals involved in sensitive criminal trials.
"This is not just an attack on an individual, but an attack on the judicial system itself," said a senior colleague of the victim. "To be gunned down during a morning walk in a supposedly safe neighborhood is unacceptable."
Forensic teams and ballistic experts remained at the cordoned-off scene for several hours on Saturday morning. Police have formed five special teams to track the suspects, utilizing the GPS data from nearby mobile towers and further surveillance footage from the escape route.
Authorities have urged anyone with information or additional dash cam footage from the area between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to come forward.
