KHARKIV, Ukraine — A relentless series of Russian strikes across the Kharkiv region has left at least three people dead and a total of 16 others injured as the Kremlin continues its aerial bombardment of civilian infrastructure.
The latest wave of attacks, which took place over the last 24 hours ending May 2, 2026, targeted high-density residential areas and essential services. Ukrainian officials report that the strikes utilized a mix of drones and heavy artillery to overwhelm local defenses.
The humanitarian toll in Kharkiv has escalated sharply following recent precision strikes that targeted civilian areas and critical infrastructure. Over the latest reporting period, three civilians were confirmed dead, with Kharkiv bearing a significant portion of the casualties from broader strikes across Ukraine.
During a daytime assault on the city, six individuals were wounded when four gas stations and an apartment building were specifically targeted, while an additional three people were injured in an overnight drone strike on a residential block. Across the wider Kharkiv Oblast, 16 more individuals were injured in various strikes, including a teenage boy.
In the village of Vasyshcheve, located within the Kharkiv district, a massive drone attack overnight wounded six people, including a child, and ignited a fire that consumed two private homes and a garage.
The recent strikes caused extensive damage to non-military targets, sparking numerous fires and destroying private property. In the Novobavarskyi, Kyivskyi, Kholodnohirskyi, and Osnovyanskyi districts, gas stations and car dealerships were hit, resulting in massive blazes. Furthermore, residential buildings in several districts, including the Shevchenkivskyi and Slobidskyi areas, sustained significant damage to facades and windows.
"All victims of the attack are civilians," stated President Volodymyr Zelensky, condemning the daily "safari" on people living in frontline communities.
Ukrainian air defenses remain under extreme pressure. While they successfully intercepted 142 of the 163 drones launched by Russian forces overnight, the sheer volume of missiles and guided aerial bombs—estimated at over 1,600 drones in the last week alone—continues to penetrate the shield. Emergency crews from the State Emergency Service remain on high alert, working through the night to contain fires and search for survivors in the rubble of destroyed homes.
As rescue operations continue, officials warn the number of casualties may rise.
