BENGALURU, India — A chilling case of premeditated murder has sent shockwaves through Bengaluru after a 27-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly burning her boyfriend alive under the guise of a romantic "surprise."
The victim, identified as Kiran, also 27, was a resident of Tumakuru district and worked alongside the accused, Prema, at a mobile service store in Rajajinagar. What was initially reported as a potential suicide has been reclassified as a gruesome homicide following a breakthrough in the police investigation.
According to Bengaluru police, the incident took place on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Prema’s residence in Anjananagar. Investigators allege that Prema lured Kiran to her home while her family members were away, promising him a "special surprise" and a "western-style marriage proposal."
Under the pretext of a romantic role-play, Prema allegedly convinced Kiran to be blindfolded and have his hands and legs tied with rope. Kiran, trusting his partner of two years, complied with the restraints. Once he was helpless, Prema reportedly doused him in an inflammable liquid—suspected to be petrol or kerosene—and set him ablaze.
Neighbors alerted emergency services after hearing agonizing screams and seeing thick smoke billowing from the house. By the time first responders arrived, Kiran had already succumbed to his injuries.
While Prema initially told authorities she was in the bathroom when the "fire started accidentally," her story quickly unraveled. Investigators discovered that the inflammable liquid had been purchased in advance, pointing to clear premeditation. Most disturbingly, police seized Prema’s mobile phone, which reportedly contains a video recording of Kiran’s final moments.
Sources close to the investigation suggest the motive was rooted in deep-seated resentment. It is alleged that Prema had recently proposed marriage to Kiran, which he had reportedly turned down. This rejection, combined with accusations of neglect, is believed to have triggered the calculated revenge plot.
"The accused used the guise of a romantic interlude to restrain the victim before carrying out the attack," a senior officer stated. "The presence of pre-purchased fuel and digital evidence suggests this was not a crime of passion, but a planned execution."
Prema remains in custody as police await the final postmortem report from Victoria Hospital. She faces charges of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, as Bengaluru reels from one of its most disturbing domestic violence cases in recent memory.
