Ceasefire Under Fire: Israeli Soldier Killed, Nine Wounded in Southern Lebanon Ambush

SOUTHERN LEBANON – A fragile 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been pushed to the brink following a deadly explosion in Southern Lebanon on Saturday, April 18, 2026. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that a reservist was killed and nine others were wounded after an engineering vehicle triggered an explosive device during operations in an IDF-controlled sector.

The incident marks the second fatal blast involving Israeli forces since the U.S.-brokered truce took effect at midnight on Thursday, April 16, 2026.

The fatal incident occurred near the village of Kafr Kila as troops from the 769th "Hiram" Regional Brigade conducted engineering and search operations. According to initial military probes, a D-9 armored bulldozer triggered an explosive device planted by Hezbollah, with the resulting blast striking a group of soldiers securing the machinery.

The IDF identified the fallen soldier as Sgt. First Class (res.) Lidor Porat, 31, while nine others were injured—one seriously—and airlifted to Israeli hospitals for treatment. In immediate retaliation, Israeli forces launched strikes against several nearby targets, including a cell identified as violating ceasefire protocols by approaching military positions.

This latest tragedy follows a similar incident on Friday, where Warrant Officer (res.) Barak Kalfon, 48, was killed and three others injured by an explosive device during a search operation in the village of Al-Jibbain.

The escalating violence has cast serious doubt on the durability of the current truce, putting the "Yellow Line" protocol under intense pressure. Under this agreement, the IDF maintains a presence in occupied sectors of Southern Lebanon with a mandate to refrain from offensive action unless threatened, while Hezbollah is strictly prohibited from conducting attacks or approaching Israeli lines.

Military officials are now urgently investigating whether the explosives involved in recent fatalities were newly planted in direct violation of the ceasefire or are "legacy" mines left behind from previous hostilities.

The recent deaths have drawn sharp reactions from Israeli leadership, even as international mediators call for urgent restraint to preserve the truce. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while extending condolences to the families of the fallen, emphasized that although Israel accepted the ceasefire, it remains resolute in responding to immediate threats.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has reaffirmed Israel’s status as a premier strategic partner following the truce announcement, humanitarian organizations like the Norwegian Refugee Council warn that this "moment of hope" is being rapidly undermined by persistent border skirmishes and strikes.

As the families of Porat and Kalfon prepare for funerals, the Israeli public remains divided over the ceasefire's efficacy. Since the expansion of operations in early March, 15 Israeli soldiers have been killed, while Lebanese authorities report hundreds of casualties and over a million displaced citizens.
