BERKELEY, CA – A terrifying scene unfolded at a West Berkeley Tesla Service Center on Monday morning, April 13, 2026, when a naked man, armed with a shotgun, stormed the facility and sent employees scrambling for their lives. The suspect, identified by Berkeley Police as 35-year-old Edward Teece, was eventually neutralized after a high-stakes confrontation with responding officers.
The mayhem began around 7:20 a.m. near the intersection of Eighth and Gilman streets. Multiple 911 callers reported a naked man "running down the street smashing windows." Moments later, dispatchers received frantic updates that the individual had entered the Tesla Service Center at 901 Gilman St., where he began pointing a shotgun at staff and customers.
As Berkeley Police established a perimeter, fearing an active shooter situation, Teece reportedly burst out of the front door. Screaming and still clutching the weapon, he ignored police commands to drop the gun and began charging toward an officer.
"The officer in the man’s sights took cover behind a pillar and then managed to tackle him as he got close," said BPD spokesperson Officer Byron White. "Several officers then worked together to restrain and handcuff him. It all worked out, but it could have gone differently."
While employees were left deeply shaken, authorities confirmed that no one inside the repair shop was physically injured during the raid.
In a bizarre twist, investigators revealed that Teece is a Yale University graduate and were a member of the school's lightweight rowing team. He reportedly moved to the Bay Area to pursue an MBA at the Wharton School’s San Francisco campus.
Following the arrest, police executed a search warrant at a warehouse used by Teece just a block away on Eighth Street. Inside, detectives discovered evidence that the shotgun had been discharged multiple times within the building before Teece began his naked rampage through the neighborhood.
Edward Teece remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail with bail set at $175,000 following his violent outburst. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has leveled multiple felony charges against him, including assault with a firearm, resisting an executive officer and the willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence. Additionally, he faces charges for carrying a loaded firearm in a public place as the investigation into the motive behind the rampage continues.
A Gun Violence Restraining Order has also been served to ensure Teece cannot legally possess weapons moving forward. While a motive for the outburst has not yet been established, the incident has highlighted ongoing security concerns at high-profile industrial sites in the East Bay.
