Chilling Defiance: Man Accused of Killing 4 Children Laughs as Uganda Daycare Trial Begins

KAMPALA, UGANDA — In a courtroom atmosphere thick with grief and indignation, the trial of Christopher Okello Onyum began on Monday, April 13, 2026. Onyum stands accused of the brutal machete attack that claimed the lives of four toddlers at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program earlier this month.

As the prosecution began detailing the horrific events of April 2, observers were stunned by the defendant's behavior. Onyum, 34, reportedly broke into fits of laughter and smirked as witnesses recounted the screams of children and the frantic efforts of staff to save them.

The unsettling display of defiance prompted several grieving parents to flee the courtroom in tears, while security personnel were forced to intervene to maintain order among the outraged crowd.

The trial is notably being held in a large tent near the crime scene in the Ggaba suburb of Kampala. This "mobile court" was established following a direct order from President Yoweri Museveni to ensure the local community could witness the proceedings firsthand.

While the judiciary defends this as "taking justice closer to the people," the Uganda Law Society has criticized the move, describing the public setting as a "judicial lynching rally" that could jeopardize the suspect's right to a fair trial.

The prosecution alleged that Onyum gained entry to the nursery by posing as a parent. After a brief discussion with administrators, he reportedly locked the primary gate to trap those inside and began attacking the children individually with a machete. The violent rampage was only halted when a security guard from a nearby church intervened.

Despite the harrowing testimony and his own erratic behavior, Onyum pleaded not guilty to four counts of murder. If convicted, he faces the death penalty—a sentence publicly supported by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba in the wake of the tragedy.

The trial continues this week, with the court expected to hear from medical experts regarding Onyum’s mental competency, given his disturbing conduct during the opening session.
