Commuter Chaos in Cubao: Modern Jeepney Ramming Electric Post Leaves 10 Injured

QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES – A typical morning commute turned into a scene of panic and destruction on Sunday, April 19, 2026 as a modern jeepney lost control and slammed into a concrete electric post at the busy intersection of P. Tuazon Boulevard and 15th Avenue in Cubao.

The collision, which occurred during the height of the morning rush hour, left at least 10 passengers injured and caused significant power disruptions and traffic gridlock across the district.

According to witnesses and initial reports from the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), the modern jeepney was traveling along P. Tuazon when it suddenly swerved, narrowly missing other vehicles before mounting the curb and impacting a Meralco power pole.

The force of the collision was severe enough to crack the concrete post, causing high-voltage electrical wires to sag dangerously over the roadway. Barangay rescue teams and MMDA personnel arrived within minutes to extricate passengers trapped inside the wreckage.

In total, ten passengers received treatment for various injuries, ranging from glass-related lacerations to blunt force trauma, with most victims being transported to Quirino Memorial Medical Center for further medical observation.

Investigators are currently looking into the cause of the accident. The driver, who sustained minor injuries, claimed that the vehicle suffered a mechanical failure, specifically involving the braking system, as he approached the intersection.

"I tried to pump the brakes, but there was no response," the driver told local authorities. "I had to choose between hitting the cars in front of me and steering toward the post to stop the vehicle."

Authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to determine if speeding or distracted driving played a role in the crash.

The accident triggered an immediate ripple effect throughout Cubao, starting with a severe traffic gridlock at the corner of P. Tuazon and 15th Avenue. The intersection remained partially closed for several hours while tow trucks worked to clear the wreckage and debris.

Simultaneously, MERALCO crews were dispatched to stabilize the fractured post and repair sagging high-tension wires, as residents in the surrounding area experienced intermittent power fluctuations following the impact.

The incident has reignited local discussions regarding the maintenance standards of the newly deployed modern jeepneys and the safety of the busy Cubao corridors.
