Croatia and Bosnia Sign Pipeline Deal to Reduce Dependency on Russia

On April 28, 2026, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and the Chair of Bosnia’s Council of Ministers, Borjana Kristo, officially signed the Southern Interconnection pipeline agreement. This project is designed to connect Bosnia to Croatia’s gas network, facilitating access to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on Krk Island.

The gas pipeline initiative, estimated to cost up to $1.5 billion, is a strategic move aimed at reducing Bosnia's current energy dependency on Russia, from which it imports nearly all of its gas. The pipelines have traditionally brought gas through Serbia and Bulgaria via the TurkStream route. The project is expected to help diversify energy supplies and enhance energy security for both countries.

Plenković announced on social media that this pipeline is crucial for strengthening energy security, particularly amid the challenging global circumstances. He emphasized its significance in transforming the region's energy landscape. Kristo echoed this sentiment, describing the agreement as a “big day for both countries.”

The project will be developed by AAFS Infrastructure and Energy, a U.S.-based company led by Jesse Binnall and Joseph Flynn. In addition to the pipeline, it includes provisions for constructing gas-fired power plants aimed at reducing Bosnia’s reliance on coal for electricity generation, addressing severe air pollution issues.

While the deal has been positively received in some quarters, the European Union has cautioned Bosnia to carefully consider its obligations before entering such energy contracts as it seeks EU membership. This partnership not only marks a critical step in combating energy dependency but also highlights the geopolitical implications of energy security in the Balkans.

In related news, the U.S. is reinforcing its commitment to the region, with Deputy Secretary of State Allison Hooker attending the summit to discuss further support aimed at reducing energy reliance on Russia and stimulating economic growth.

The successful execution of this pipeline project is expected to aid Bosnia in overcoming its current energy crisis while also enhancing the regional cooperation in energy diversification amidst ongoing tensions in the global energy market.
