ORIENTAL MINDORO, Philippines – A Sunday journey turned into a scene of devastation in Barangay Fortuna when a passenger jeepney lost control and overturned, resulting in the deaths of four passengers and leaving 14 others injured. Local authorities and emergency responders were dispatched to the site shortly after the vehicle somersaulted along a stretch of the provincial road.

Initial reports from the Socorro Municipal Police indicate that the jeepney was traversing the route through Barangay Fortuna when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The jeepney subsequently skidded and flipped on its side, trapping several passengers beneath the chassis and scattering others across the pavement.

Preliminary investigations at the scene confirmed four fatalities resulting from severe blunt force trauma, with victims pronounced dead either on-site or shortly after reaching the hospital. An additional 14 passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor lacerations to critical fractures and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent care. Authorities are currently examining the vehicle's condition to determine if a mechanical failure, such as a tire blowout or brake malfunction, caused the driver to lose control.

Barangay officials and residents were the first to provide aid, helping to extricate victims from the wreckage before ambulances arrived. The Socorro police have cordoned off the area to conduct a thorough technical inspection of the jeepney and to determine if the vehicle was carrying more than its authorized passenger capacity.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with public utility vehicles (PUVs) in rural provinces. Residents noted that while the road in Barangay Fortuna is well-paved, the combination of high speeds and aging vehicle maintenance often leads to tragic outcomes.
