Europe's Reliance on US Gas Set to Rise, Research Report Says

According to a recent analysis released on May 12, 2026, Europe finds itself facing a significant energy challenge as its reliance on U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) continues to escalate. The study highlights that if current supply agreements are fulfilled and European gas demand reduction efforts stall, up to 80% of Europe’s LNG imports could originate from the U.S. by 2030, up from 57% in 2025.

Europe has been attempting to diversify its energy supply since the onset of the war in Ukraine, which severely restricted gas flows from Russia. In the past four years, the bloc has successfully curtailed Russian natural gas imports by 75%, yet as it pivots to the U.S. and other suppliers, it faces new vulnerabilities.

The reliance on U.S. gas is raising concerns about the geopolitical ramifications of such dependence. Experts argue that shifting from one major supplier (Russia) to another (U.S.) does not equate to genuine diversification. The U.S. LNG, while essential, is often more expensive than other sources, putting pressure on Europe’s energy costs.

Additionally, the current geopolitical landscape, heightened by ongoing crises such as the conflict in Iran, has complicated global gas markets. As the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical choke point for oil and gas supplies, Europe is experiencing rising energy prices and increased supply chain risks. Reports indicate that Europe’s energy bill has surged by approximately €24 billion since the conflict in the Middle East began, severely impacting its economic stability.

Despite efforts to enhance renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, significant portions of the European economy, including transportation and heavy industry, remain dependent on fossil fuels. As such, policymakers are urged to draw up comprehensive strategies that encompass not only diversification but also a rapid transition to sustainable energy solutions.

This growing dependence on U.S. LNG is a critical aspect of Europe’s energy security strategy amid changing global dynamics, with calls for a renewed focus on domestic energy production and overall sustainability to mitigate future risks.
