CABRAMATTA, Sydney — A somber atmosphere has taken hold of Sydney’s southwest this afternoon following a tragic traffic incident that claimed the life of an elderly man. Emergency services were called to Hughes Street in Cabramatta at approximately 4:00 PM on Friday, May 8, 2026, following reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

First responders arrived to find a man, believed to be in his 60s, with critical injuries. Despite the exhaustive efforts of NSW Ambulance paramedics who treated him at the scene, the man could not be revived and was tragically pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle, a 51-year-old man, was not physically injured in the collision. In accordance with standard police procedure, he was taken to a nearby hospital to undergo mandatory blood and urine testing.

Officers from the Fairfield City Police Area Command quickly cordoned off the area, establishing a crime scene that stretched across a significant portion of Hughes Street. Specialist investigators from the Crash Investigation Unit arrived shortly after to begin a forensic examination of the site, working into the evening to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the fatal impact.

The crash caused significant disruption during the peak Friday afternoon commute. Police issued an immediate "avoid the area" warning as traffic diversions were implemented, leading to heavy congestion on surrounding roads including Cabramatta Road and Cumberland Highway.

Local residents and business owners looked on in shock as the busy commercial hub was transformed into a restricted forensic zone. "It’s a very busy stretch of road, especially at this time of day," said one witness. "To see something like this happen right in our community is just heartbreaking."

The identity of the deceased man has not yet been formally released as police work to notify his next of kin. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
