FIA Cancels April’s Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix Amid Ongoing Iran Conflict

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has confirmed the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, originally set for April 12 and April 19, 2026, respectively. This decision was made due to growing unrest in the region, specifically related to military strikes and retaliations following U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, stated, “While several alternatives were considered, it was ultimately decided that no substitutions will be made in April. This decision, although difficult, prioritizes the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved.” FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the organization's commitment to safety.

Both events were expected to attract significant attendance and were part of a lucrative segment of the Formula 1 calendar, which would now reduce the season to 22 races, the shortest since 2023. The cancellation came after military actions prompted a reassessment of risks in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, which have faced missile attacks and increased tensions in recent weeks.

The cancellation means a five-week gap in the racing calendar, moving from the Japanese Grand Prix on March 29 to the next scheduled race in Miami on May 3. Formula 1 officials expressed concerns over logistics, noting that freight for the races must be organized well in advance, and the looming March 20 deadline for shipping made it impractical to wait for a resolution in the security situation.

Concerns had grown not just for logistics, but for the safety of team personnel in the region. Drivers and team principals reflected on the situation, prioritizing the importance of safety over the racing calendar, with Lewis Hamilton stating, “I know that Stefano will do what’s right for all of us and the sport.”

With the abrupt cancellation of these races, the FIA and F1 are now focusing on maintaining stability and safety in the remaining parts of the 2026 season, hoping for a quick return to normalcy in the region.
