GAWLER — A community is in shock and police have launched an urgent manhunt after a heartless hit-and-run in a busy shopping center carpark left a mother and her young son hospitalized on Friday morning, May 8, 2026. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the collision, leaving witnesses to rush to the aid of the injured pair.

The alarming incident occurred at approximately 10:45 AM at the Gawler Central shopping precinct. According to South Australia Police, a 34-year-old woman and her 6-year-old son were walking toward the center entrance when a dark-colored sedan accelerated through a pedestrian crossing.

Witnesses described a "sickening thud" as the vehicle struck the pair. Rather than stopping to render assistance, the driver reportedly paused for a few seconds before speeding out of the carpark toward Cowan Street, narrowly missing other parked cars and pedestrians in the process.

Emergency services arrived within minutes to find the mother heroically shielding her son on the bitumen. Paramedics treated her for suspected head injuries and lower limb fractures before transporting her to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in serious but stable condition.
