Gawler Hit-and-Run: Mother and Son Hospitalized After Cowardly Carpark Attack

GAWLER — A community is in shock and police have launched an urgent manhunt after a heartless hit-and-run in a busy shopping center carpark left a mother and her young son hospitalized on Friday morning, May 8, 2026. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the collision, leaving witnesses to rush to the aid of the injured pair.

The alarming incident occurred at approximately 10:45 AM at the Gawler Central shopping precinct. According to South Australia Police, a 34-year-old woman and her 6-year-old son were walking toward the center entrance when a dark-colored sedan accelerated through a pedestrian crossing.

Witnesses described a "sickening thud" as the vehicle struck the pair. Rather than stopping to render assistance, the driver reportedly paused for a few seconds before speeding out of the carpark toward Cowan Street, narrowly missing other parked cars and pedestrians in the process.

Emergency services arrived within minutes to find the mother heroically shielding her son on the bitumen. Paramedics treated her for suspected head injuries and lower limb fractures before transporting her to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in serious but stable condition. Her son, who suffered deep abrasions and a suspected broken arm, was taken to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital where he remains under medical observation.

Family members have described the mother as a "devoted protector" who likely took the brunt of the impact to save her child.

Major Crash investigators have spent the afternoon scouring the carpark for forensic evidence and collecting CCTV footage from surrounding businesses. Police are searching for a dark grey or black late-model sedan, possibly a Holden Commodore or similar, with noticeable front-end damage on the passenger side.

"To leave a mother and child lying in a carpark and simply drive away is a cowardly act of the highest order," a SAPOL spokesperson said. "We are reviewing high-definition footage and it is only a matter of time before we have a registration number. We urge the driver to come forward now before we knock on their door."

The Gawler community has reacted with outrage, with many locals taking to social media to express their disgust. Local business owners have handed over private security footage to help detectives piece together the vehicle's escape route.

Authorities are asking anyone who was in the Gawler Central carpark between 10:30 AM and 11:00 AM—especially those with dashcam footage—to contact Crime Stoppers immediately.
