Gunfire Erupts Near Israeli Consulate in Istanbul: 3 Dead, 2 Police Officers Injured in Targeted Attack

ISTANBUL, TÜRKIYE — A high-security district in Istanbul was transformed into a combat zone on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, when gunmen opened fire near the building housing the Israeli Consulate. The brazen daytime attack left three people dead and two police officers wounded, sparking a massive security lockdown in the Levent neighborhood.

The incident began around 10:30 AM local time when at least two assailants approached a security checkpoint near the consulate entrance. Armed with automatic weapons, the attackers reportedly opened fire on Turkish National Police officers stationed at the perimeter.

Witnesses described a frantic scene as pedestrians dove for cover behind parked cars and inside nearby shopping malls while a fierce gun battle ensued between the attackers and security forces. Authorities have confirmed that three individuals were killed during the exchange, with early reports suggesting the deceased include two of the attackers and one civilian caught in the crossfire.

Additionally, two Turkish police officers sustained gunshot wounds while attempting to neutralize the threat; both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where one is reportedly in serious condition.

Within minutes of the first shots, special operations units and armored vehicles flooded the area. The Israeli Consulate and surrounding diplomatic missions were placed under immediate "red alert" status. "I heard a rapid succession of pops, like fireworks, but much louder," said a local office worker. "Then people started screaming and running. The police were everywhere in seconds, shouting for us to stay away from the windows."

Turkish Interior Ministry officials have launched a large-scale counter-terrorism investigation. While no group has officially claimed responsibility, the timing and location of the attack have led investigators to treat this as a targeted strike against the diplomatic facility.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that all consulate staff are safe and accounted for, as the attackers were unable to penetrate the building’s primary security layers.

Turkish authorities have condemned the violence, calling it a "heinous attack on the peace and security of Istanbul." Security has since been doubled at all diplomatic missions and religious sites across the city as a precautionary measure.

While two attackers were neutralized at the scene, police have cordoned off several blocks and are utilizing drone surveillance and CCTV footage to determine if a getaway driver or secondary cell was involved. The Levent district remains partially closed to traffic as forensic teams sweep the area for evidence.
