GUWAHATI, Assam – In a significant blow to inter-state narcotics trafficking, Guwahati Police have intercepted a major heroin consignment and apprehended a woman hailing from Manipur. The operation, part of an intensified crackdown on the "Chicken’s Neck" corridor, resulted in the seizure of 50 high-grade drug containers intended for local distribution.
Acting on a specific tip-off regarding a shipment entering the city via public transport, a tactical team from the Basistha Police station established a perimeter near a primary transit hub.
The suspect, identified as a resident of Manipur's Churachandpur district, was intercepted while attempting to board a local ride-sharing service. During a search of her personal belongings, officers discovered 50 small plastic containers—commonly referred to in the trade as "soap cases"—filled with a granular brown substance later confirmed to be high-grade heroin.
"This arrest is a result of meticulous intelligence gathering," stated a senior police official. "The suspect was acting as a key courier for a larger syndicate operating across the Manipur-Assam border."
Preliminary investigations suggest the seized heroin, weighing several hundred grams, has an estimated street value of several lakhs in the local market. Authorities believe the consignment was processed near the Indo-Myanmar border before being transported through the hills of Manipur into Assam.
The operation revealed an evolving modus operandi where traffickers increasingly utilize female couriers and public transport to blend in with civilian travelers and evade highway checkpoints. Investigators indicate that the 50 seized containers were slated for "retail" distribution, destined for street-level peddlers across Guwahati’s metropolitan area.
The arrest follows a series of high-profile busts in the region as part of the government’s "War on Drugs" initiative. Guwahati has emerged as a critical transit point for synthetic drugs and narcotics moving from the Golden Triangle toward mainland India.
The accused has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. She is currently in police custody and is being interrogated to unmask the Guwahati-based recipients of the shipment.
Guwahati Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. "The battle against narcotics requires the cooperation of the community," the department stated in a social media briefing. "Every seizure of this size prevents hundreds of potential doses from reaching our youth."
