VAISHALI, BIHAR – A sleepy village in Bihar’s Vaishali district was jolted into a state of high-altitude panic on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, when a 29-year-old man scaled a 100-foot mobile tower. His motivation was a high-stakes ultimatum: he refused to descend until granted immediate permission to marry his sister-in-law.
The man, identified as Rajkumar Sharma, a father of two from Dharampur Ram Rai, remained perched on the Airtel telecom tower for several hours, singing songs and recording videos as a massive crowd gathered below. The "Sholay-style" protest—referencing a famous Bollywood scene—triggered an emergency response involving more than 100 personnel from the Desari and Chandpura police stations.
According to local reports, Sharma has been married since 2015. However, he claimed that he had been in love with his sister-in-law (his wife's younger sister) since childhood. Despite both of them having two children each with their respective spouses, Sharma insisted that they had previously "married" in secret and that she was now reneging on her "vow of love."
In a video recorded from the top of the tower, Sharma was heard saying:
"I am dying for my sister-in-law. I want love. My wife has no problem with her sister staying with us. I am ready to raise all four children."
The drama unfolded from morning until late afternoon, escalating as Sharma threatened to jump and forcing the local administration into a series of drastic interventions. To prevent accidental electrocution, authorities implemented a widespread power cut, while police and village leaders spent hours using megaphones to offer vague assurances that his demands would be considered upon his safe return.
Meanwhile, the situation was further complicated by hundreds of onlookers who blocked the roads to film the event, creating a chaotic environment that made it difficult for emergency teams to maintain a clear rescue path.
The standoff finally concluded when the man was successfully persuaded to climb down after hours of grueling negotiation. He was immediately taken into custody by the Chandpura police.
While the incident ended without physical injury, it has left the community in a state of unease. Local officials confirmed that Sharma is currently undergoing counseling and an investigation is underway to determine if charges for public endangerment will be filed.
For now, the village has since returned to its quiet routine, though the mobile tower stands as a lingering symbol of the day a private family dispute reached dangerous new heights. While the man’s wife suffered several fainting spells during the traumatic ordeal, she is now in stable condition. Ultimately, no wedding was performed, and the situation concluded without further incident.
