HAZYVIEW, Mpumalanga — South African Police Service (SAPS) investigators have launched a high-priority murder probe following a chilling discovery on the outskirts of Hazyview. In the early hours of Thursday morning, April 23, 2026, the charred remains of three individuals were found along the R535, sparking fears of a targeted execution and setting the province on edge.

The discovery was made by a passing motorist who noticed smoke rising from a ditch beside the highway. Upon closer inspection, the witness discovered a smoldering scene containing three human forms.

Police and forensic teams arriving at the site confirmed that the victims had been set alight, leaving them burnt beyond recognition. The intensity of the fire has made preliminary identification impossible, forcing authorities to rely on DNA profiling and dental records to determine who the victims were.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli stated that the nature of the crime suggests a high degree of premeditation. "The victims were found in a relatively secluded stretch of the R535, a route often used by travelers between Hazyview and Graskop," Mdhluli noted. "At this stage, we are investigating three counts of murder, though the motive remains entirely unknown."

While police have not yet confirmed if the victims were killed at the scene or transported there, the lack of struggle marks in the immediate vicinity suggests they may have been executed elsewhere before being moved to the highway for disposal.

This triple homicide comes at a time when Mpumalanga is grappling with a surge in violent crime and "vigilante-style" killings. Local community leaders have expressed outrage, pointing to a lack of consistent highway patrols along the R535 and R40 corridors, which are vital for the region’s tourism and agricultural sectors.

"This is a highway of horrors," said one local business owner. "First it was hijackings, now we are finding bodies in the ditches. It sends a message that criminals have no fear of being caught on these roads."

The Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner has ordered the immediate activation of the 72-hour mobilization plan, pulling in specialized units to track down the perpetrators. Police are currently reviewing missing person’s reports from the Hazyview, Bushbuckridge, and Nelspruit areas in hopes of finding a match.

Authorities have issued an urgent appeal to the public: Anyone who may have seen suspicious vehicles—particularly bakkies or SUVs—parked along the R535 between midnight and 4:00 AM is urged to come forward.
