The Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) has officially declared its intention to dissolve, marking the end of a historic organization founded in 1958. The decision comes in response to what the federation describes as “increasingly severe pressures” faced by its members in recent years. Isaac Lai, the chief representative of the HKFS, explained that the dissolution process was initiated during a meeting held by the standing committee, with plans to complete the procedure in the near future.

Founded as a coalition of student unions from various higher education institutions, the HKFS has long been an influential voice in student activism, championing social causes and mobilizing student involvement in significant political movements. However, recent events, including the implementation of the national security law in 2020, have placed immense pressure on student organizations across Hong Kong, prompting several unions to either suspend their operations or disband entirely.

In a statement released via social media, the HKFS reflected on its nearly seven-decade history of engagement in major political and social issues, expressing regret over the current situation. “Regrettably, as circumstances have changed, the members of the HKFS and their supporters have faced increasingly severe pressure in recent years,” the organization stated.

Lai mentioned that this was not an easy decision and came from a context of no alternatives. He noted that several student unions, including those from Lingnan University, which is the HKFS’s only remaining active member, had already experienced intense scrutiny and operational constraints, further highlighting the diminishing space for student activism.

The dissolution of the HKFS emphasizes a troubling trend in Hong Kong, where student groups, once vibrant centers of political discourse, now grapple with heightened risks and threats, leaving many feeling compelled to cease operations.
