PUNE — In a crime that has sent shockwaves through Maharashtra, a 36-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 for the brutal murder of his nine-year-old daughter. The incident, which took place in the Ambegaon area, allegedly stemmed from a violent outburst after the father discovered the child had falsified her school report card to hide failing grades.

The matter came to light after neighbors reported a foul smell and suspicious smoke emanating from a shed behind the family’s residence late Tuesday night. Upon arrival, local police discovered the charred remains of the young girl.

Investigators recovered a heavy-duty wood cutter from the scene, which they believe was the primary weapon used in the assault. During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to becoming "uncontrollably enraged" upon discovering his daughter had used a red pen to alter her marks on a recent school evaluation.

Following the murder, the father allegedly carried the body to a shed and used kerosene to set it ablaze in a desperate attempt to destroy the evidence before his wife returned from work.

Neighbors and school officials have since provided statements suggesting a history of academic pressure within the household. The victim, a fourth-grade student, was described by teachers as a "quiet and fearful" child who had been struggling with mathematics.

The accused, who worked as a daily-wage laborer, reportedly placed a heavy emphasis on his daughter’s education as a means of "escaping poverty." The man has been charged under Section 103 (Murder) and Section 238 (Causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He was produced in court on Wednesday and has been remanded to police custody for further investigation.
