Anant Ambani, son of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, formally expressed his intent to rescue a group of 80 hippos in Colombia, known as the descendants of those introduced into the country by the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar. These hippos, often referred to as “cocaine hippos,” have become a cause of environmental concern in Colombia, with the government planning a cull to control their population.

In a letter to Colombia's environment minister, Ambani outlined his plan for the translocation of these hippos to his Vantara animal center in Gujarat, India. This facility promotes wildlife rescue and conservation and is home to various species, including elephants, tigers, and crocodiles.

Ambani emphasized a desire for a "safe, scientifically-led translocation," ensuring the hippos would receive lifelong care at Vantara. He stated, "These 80 hippos did not choose where they were born, nor did they create the circumstances they now face. If we have the ability to save them through a safe and humane solution, we have a responsibility to try."

The hippo population in Colombia has grown drastically since Escobar's death in 1993, having been initially introduced into his private zoo at Hacienda Nápoles. After escaping into the wild, these hippos have thrived without natural predators and have been reported to disrupt local ecosystems and threaten nearby communities.

Colombian officials have struggled with management solutions, including previous attempts to neuter individuals in the herd, which were deemed unsuccessful. The cull of approximately 80 hippos has been proposed as a necessary measure to mitigate their growing impact.

Ambani's offer has yet to receive an official response from the Colombian government, but his dedicated proposal highlights the ongoing discourse surrounding wildlife management and conservation efforts intertwined with human socio-environmental issues. As discussions continue, the potential rescue could not only save the hippos but also spark conversations about the responsibilities involved in wildlife conservation.
