Inferno in Barka: Massive Fire Engulfs Shops and Furniture Warehouse

BARKA, OMAN – A massive blaze tore through a commercial district in Barka early Tuesday morning, deciding multiple retail shops and a large furniture warehouse in a towering inferno that sent plumes of thick black smoke visible for miles across the Al Batinah South Governorate.

The fire reportedly broke out at approximately 8:30 am on May 5, 2026, within the storage section of a prominent furniture warehouse. Driven by flammable materials including timber, foam, and upholstery fabrics, the flames quickly jumped to adjacent retail storefronts before emergency services could fully contain the perimeter.

Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) teams from Barka and neighboring stations were dispatched immediately to the scene. Firefighters battled the intense heat for over four hours to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby residential complex and a petrol station located less than 500 meters away.

While a formal forensic investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the spark, the initial impact of the blaze has been severe. The furniture warehouse suffered a total loss, including an estimated hundreds of thousands of riyals worth of inventory.

Beyond the total loss of the warehouse, the fire caused extensive structural damage to at least three adjacent businesses, including an electronics outlet and a hardware store. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, though paramedics treated several workers on-site for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

The incident in Barka adds to a growing list of industrial and commercial fires in the region this year. Following the recent drone-related incidents in the Sohar Industrial Area and the Port of Salalah, local authorities are under increasing pressure to review fire safety protocols and emergency response times in high-density commercial zones.

While there is currently no evidence linking the Barka fire to external hostilities or the regional tensions affecting Northern Oman, security officials have cordoned off the area to rule out any possibility of foul play.

Local business owners expressed heartbreak as they watched their livelihoods go up in smoke. "The wind was pushing the flames so fast," said one witness. "By the time the first sirens were heard, the roof of the warehouse had already collapsed."

The CDAA has reminded all commercial establishments to ensure that fire suppression systems are fully operational and that storage areas are kept free of obstructed exits and hazardous clutter, especially as temperatures begin to climb toward the summer peak.
