The Israeli military has initiated an investigation following the emergence of a photograph showing an Israeli soldier smoking and placing a cigarette into the mouth of a Virgin Mary statue in the Christian village of Debel, located in southern Lebanon. The soldier's actions have drawn significant criticism, prompting the military to state that it views the incident with "utmost severity."

The photograph, which circulated online earlier today, was reportedly taken several weeks ago. It comes on the heels of a similar incident where another Israeli soldier was seen striking a statue of Jesus with a sledgehammer. The military confirmed that command measures would be taken against the soldier involved based on the investigation's findings.

Father Fadi Felfeli, the head of Debel's congregation, expressed outrage, stating that such acts reflect "extremism and intolerance" that are distressing in a village known for its peace and neutrality. He confirmed that although the Virgin Mary statue remains intact, the act is viewed as unethical.

The Roman Catholic Church's representative in the Holy Land also condemned the behavior as "disrespectful and outrageous," urging the Israeli government and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to take serious action against the soldier. The church issued a call for a clear message that such behavior is unacceptable.

In response, the IDF emphasized its respect for freedom of religion and the sanctity of holy sites across all faiths, asserting that the soldier's actions deviate significantly from the values expected of military personnel.

As the conflict persists in the region, including ongoing military confrontations between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, the IDF stressed its commitment to avoiding harm to civilian infrastructure, particularly religious buildings.
