This case centers around allegations against Meta, the parent company of Instagram, and Google’s YouTube, claiming their platforms are deliberately designed to be addictive and harmful to children.
The trial's pivotal figure is a 19-year-old identified only as KGM, whose experience with social media has been linked to severe mental health issues, including depression and suicidal thoughts. KGM argues that her addiction to these platforms stemmed from design features specifically created to maximize user engagement, paralleling techniques used in gambling and tobacco industries, which prioritize revenue over user well-being.
Sacha Haworth, executive director of the nonprofit Tech Oversight Project, stated, “This is just the first case in a series of lawsuits against Big Tech for its harmful products, highlighting the numerous parents and school districts stepping forward.”
