Magyar Defends Appointing Brother-in-Law as Justice Minister

Péter Magyar, Hungary's newly elected Prime Minister, is under fire for appointing his brother-in-law, Márton Melléthei-Barna, as the next Minister of Justice. He made this announcement as part of his administration's formation following a landslide victory over the Fidesz party. Critics have raised concerns about nepotism, particularly as Magyar campaigned on a platform promising to combat corruption and restore public trust in government institutions.

In a video message addressing these criticisms, Magyar emphasized that the selection was based on Melléthei-Barna’s competence and commitment to the rule of law rather than personal connections. He described the appointment as crucial in tackling the significant challenges facing Hungary’s judicial system.

Melléthei-Barna is a well-respected lawyer and has been closely involved with Magyar’s political efforts since the inception of the Tisza Party in 2020, where he served as legal director. He also played key roles in various legal capacities, including as a party representative during the European Parliament elections.

Despite acknowledging the family ties, Magyar stated that his brother-in-law's qualifications were "unquestionable" and crucial in meeting the demands of a "functioning and humane Hungary." Magyar's sister, Anna Ilona Melléthei-Barna, a long-time judge, will suspend her duties to avoid conflicts of interest during his tenure.

With plans to take office on May 9, Magyar is tasked with reviving Hungary's relationship with the European Union, aiming to unlock billions of euros in funding that has been frozen over concerns regarding the rule of law.

As he works to heal the wounds of past corruption, Magyar hopes his appointments, including that of Melléthei-Barna, will help restore faith in Hungary's governance.
