DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A drone strike targeting oil storage infrastructure near Dubai International Airport triggered a large fire early on Monday, March 16, 2026, forcing authorities to temporarily close airspace and suspend airport operations at one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs.
According to officials, the unmanned aircraft struck a fuel tank near the airport, igniting a blaze that sent thick smoke rising above the surrounding area. Emergency crews from Dubai Civil Defense rushed to the scene and worked to contain the flames while aviation authorities halted flights as a precaution to protect passengers and staff.
Airport operations were suspended for several hours as firefighters battled the fire and security teams assessed the damage. During the disruption, numerous flights were diverted to alternative airports, including Al Maktoum International Airport and Al Ain International Airport, while several airlines canceled or delayed departures.
Authorities later confirmed that the blaze had been brought under control and that no injuries were reported. Following safety inspections and coordination with airlines, the airport began gradually restoring operations later in the day, though some flights continued to face delays or cancellations.
The incident is part of a broader wave of drone and missile attacks across the Gulf region, linked to escalating hostilities involving Iran and a U.S.–Israeli coalition. The strikes have targeted infrastructure in several Gulf States, including energy facilities, ports, and transportation hubs, raising concerns about regional security and global aviation disruptions.
Aviation analysts warn that attacks on key travel hubs like Dubai’s main airport can have far-reaching effects on global travel and trade, as the airport serves as a major transit point connecting Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Authorities in the UAE said investigations into the drone strike are ongoing and reaffirmed that measures are being strengthened to protect critical infrastructure across the country as regional tensions remain high.
