A significant fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning at Pink Punters, a popular LGBTQ+ nightclub in Fenny Stratford, near Milton Keynes. Around 2 a.m., flames rapidly engulfed parts of the venue, prompting swift action from staff who evacuated revellers safely.
Thames Valley Police confirmed that a 51-year-old man from Milton Keynes has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody as investigations continue. Authorities have urged the public not to speculate on the motive behind the incident, which remains unclear.
Eyewitness Molly Firman, who was inside the club, described a chaotic scene where staff urgently instructed patrons to leave. "Out of nowhere, all staff and security were screaming, 'you need to get out now'," she recalled. Firman reported that the fire seemed to escalate quickly, leading to a surreal and terrifying experience for everyone present.
The nightclub owner, Frank McMahon, expressed his heartbreak over the destruction of the longstanding venue, which has been a fixture in the community for over 36 years. Despite the loss of the building, he emphasized that the spirit and memories of the club would endure, stating, "Pink Punters will be back."
Emergency services including Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly, with 12 fire engines dispatched to tackle the blaze. Fortunately, all attendees were evacuated without injury, though crews remained on the scene to deal with small pockets of flame and to ensure safety.
The incident has drawn concern from local politicians, with the Labour MP for Buckingham and Bletchley, Callum Anderson, urging that those responsible face the full force of the law.
