Marie-Louise Eta Becomes First Female Head Coach in Men's Top Five European Leagues at Bundesliga Side Union Berlin

Union Berlin took a bold step in sports history by appointing Marie-Louise Eta as their head coach, making her the first woman to lead a men's team in the Bundesliga and the top five European leagues. The announcement followed the firing of Steffen Baumgart after a series of poor performances that left the team in 11th place, precariously close to the relegation zone.

Eta, who previously served as the assistant coach and led the under-19 men's team, is stepping into this pivotal role with just five matches remaining in the season. Expected to secure the points needed for league survival, she stated, "I am delighted that the club has entrusted me with this challenging task. One of Union's strengths has always been our ability to pull together in tough situations."

Born on July 7, 1991, Eta, who played for Werder Bremen before transitioning into management, made headlines in 2023 when she became the first female assistant coach in Bundesliga history. Her journey has been marked by breaking barriers, having also taken charge of the men’s team temporarily during a coach's suspension in 2024.

Union Berlin's sporting director, Horst Heldt, emphasized the need for a fresh start, citing the team's disappointing performance in the second half of the season. "Two wins out of fourteen matches since the winter break do not give us the confidence that we can still turn things around with the current set-up," he stated.

The club is now looking forward to their next match against Wolfsburg, which is crucial in the fight against relegation. eta’s leadership not only highlights her capabilities but also symbolizes a significant shift in gender dynamics within professional football. With her recently outlined plans to take charge of the women's team this summer, Eta's move is regarded as a major milestone in promoting women's roles in sports management.
