Massacre on the Pitch: 29 Dead After Boko Haram Targets School Football Field in Adamawa

GOMBI, ADAMAWA — A horrific scene unfolded in the quiet community of Guyaku on Sunday evening, April 26, 2026, as suspected Boko Haram militants launched a calculated assault on a local school football field, leaving at least 29 people dead. The attack, which targeted a crowd of young people and families gathered for an evening match, marks one of the deadliest strikes in the region so far this year.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of sudden, overwhelming violence. As a football match was underway in the Guyaku community of Gombi Local Government Area, gunmen reportedly emerged from the surrounding brush on motorbikes and opened fire indiscriminately into the crowd.

The attackers did not stop at the pitch. Following the initial massacre, the militants moved through the village, systematically torching homes, religious buildings—including a local church—and destroying dozens of motorcycles. The assault lasted for several hours as residents fled into the nearby hills for safety.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri confirmed the staggering death toll of 29 during a somber visit to the community on Monday. Among the victims were young athletes, spectators, and several women who were caught in the crossfire.

"This is a heart-wrenching tragedy that has ripped through the soul of our state," Governor Fintiri stated while commiserating with the bereaved families. "We are dealing with enemies of progress who target our children at play. This will not go unpunished."

Security analysts suggest that the targeting of a football field was a deliberate choice to maximize casualties and instill fear in "soft targets." While the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has also been active in the northeast, Governor Fintiri and local security officials have pointed the finger at Boko Haram remnants operating out of the nearby Sambisa forest fringes.

The attack occurred after reports that village leaders had recently rejected demands from extremist groups to pay "protection taxes" or adopt their radical interpretations of Sharia law.

Following the massacre, the Nigerian Army deployed additional troops to the Gombi LGA to conduct clearance operations in the surrounding forests, while the state government initiated a multi-pronged response. Immediate relief, including medical support and emergency supplies, has been dispatched to survivors at the Federal Medical Centre in Yola.

To prevent further tragedies, a temporary ban on large evening gatherings at school fields has been implemented across "frontline" border communities. Furthermore, the government is accelerating the rollout of local hunter and vigilante groups to bolster community policing and assist the military with critical intelligence gathering.
