Kuwait City / Persian Gulf — A powerful explosion struck an oil tanker anchored off the coast of Kuwait, triggering an oil leak and raising fresh concerns about maritime security and environmental risks in the Gulf amid escalating regional tensions.
According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the blast occurred roughly 30 nautical miles southeast of Kuwait’s Mubarak Al-Kabeer port late Wednesday night of March 04, 2026. The vessel’s captain reported hearing and seeing a large explosion on the port side of the tanker, followed shortly by a small craft leaving the area, an incident that is now under investigation.
Initial reports indicate that the explosion damaged one of the ship’s cargo tanks, causing oil to leak into surrounding waters and raising concerns about possible environmental impact in the busy shipping corridor. Authorities also said the vessel began taking on water, though no major fires were reported on board.
Despite the damage, officials confirmed that all crew members were safe and accounted for. Maritime safety agencies issued advisories to vessels operating in the region, urging heightened vigilance as investigations continue into the cause of the explosion.
