Medical Negligence Alleged: Mother and Newborn Die During Childbirth in Faizabad Hospital

FAIZABAD (AYODHYA) — A wave of anger and grief swept through the Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh after a 26-year-old woman and her newborn baby tragically died during delivery at a private nursing home on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. The family has leveled serious allegations of medical negligence against the hospital staff, claiming that the absence of a qualified surgeon led to the dual fatality. The victim, identified as Sunita Devi, was admitted to the facility early Tuesday morning after going into labor.

According to the family members, Sunita was initially told by the nursing home staff that it would be a "normal delivery." However, as complications arose, the situation quickly spiraled out of control. Relatives allege that despite the deteriorating condition of both the mother and the unborn child, the hospital management delayed referring them to a higher medical center.

"They kept telling us everything was fine, but we could see the staff was panicking," said Sunita’s husband, Ramesh. "By the time they admitted they couldn't handle the case, it was too late. My wife and my child were gone because there was no doctor available when we needed one most."

Following the news of the deaths, distraught relatives and local residents staged a protest outside the hospital premises, demanding the immediate arrest of the clinic's owner and the medical staff involved. The protesters blocked the nearby road for several hours, relenting only after senior police officials arrived at the scene to provide assurances of a fair investigation.

The tragic timeline of events began at 06:00 AM, when Sunita Devi was admitted to the private nursing home. By 11:30 AM, serious complications were reported, and her family alleges that the situation was exacerbated by the critical absence of a senior doctor. The crisis reached a heartbreaking peak at 01:15 PM when the newborn was pronounced dead shortly after birth. Only forty-five minutes later, at 02:00 PM, Sunita Devi also passed away, succumbing to excessive bleeding caused by Postpartum Hemorrhage.

The District Magistrate has ordered a high-level inquiry into the operations of the private hospital. A team from the Chief Medical Officer's (CMO) office visited the facility to inspect medical records and verify the licenses of the practicing staff.

"A case has been registered based on the family's complaint," stated a local police spokesperson. "The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death. If any lapse in medical protocol or negligence is found, the hospital's license will be revoked, and criminal charges will follow."

This incident has reignited concerns regarding the mushrooming of unregulated private clinics in rural and semi-urban parts of Uttar Pradesh. Local activists argue that many such "nursing homes" operate without essential emergency equipment or life-support systems, often putting the lives of expectant mothers at grave risk.

As of Wednesday morning, the hospital remains closed as the staff reportedly fled the premises following the protest. The grieving family continues to wait for the autopsy results, seeking justice for the lives lost in what they describe as a "preventable catastrophe."
