MELBOURNE — A high-stakes police pursuit through Melbourne’s eastern suburbs ended in a dramatic collision and the arrest of three individuals early Monday morning, April 27, 2026. The incident, which began as a routine patrol, quickly escalated into a dangerous chase that left a trail of debris across one of the city's busiest arterial roads.
The mayhem began around 1:15 a.m. local time, when officers spotted allegedly stolen silver SUV driving erratically near Box Hill. When police attempted to intercept the vehicle, the driver reportedly accelerated, reaching speeds well above the limit as they wove through suburban streets.
The pursuit came to a violent end in Doncaster East when the driver lost control while attempting a high-speed turn, clipping a median strip before slamming into a parked, unoccupied vehicle. The force of the impact spun the stolen SUV 180 degrees, bringing it to a halt in the middle of the intersection.
"It sounded like an explosion," said a local resident. "I looked out the window and saw police cars swarming the intersection with their lights flashing. It's a miracle no one was walking on that footpath."
Following the crash, three occupants—two men and a woman—attempted to flee the wreckage on foot. However, they were quickly surrounded by members of the Dog Squad and the Air Wing, which had been tracking the vehicle from above.
All three suspects were apprehended within minutes of the collision. While the vehicle sustained significant front-end damage, the occupants escaped with only minor injuries and were cleared by paramedics at the scene before being taken into police custody.
This latest incident highlights a concerning trend of vehicle thefts and high-speed evasions in Melbourne’s eastern corridor. Victoria Police have recently increased patrols as part of a targeted crackdown on "joyride" thefts, which often involve young offenders and high-performance vehicles.
The three individuals are expected to face the Ringwood Magistrates' Court later today. Detectives are also investigating whether the trio is linked to a string of recent residential burglaries in the Manningham area.
