Tomislav Sokol, a Member of the European Parliament from Croatia, expressed deep concern regarding Montenegro’s geopolitical choices. During a recent interview, he asserted that if Podgorica opts for the influence of the "Serbian World", instead of pursuing a path towards the European Union, it risks compromising its sovereignty and independence.

Sokol explained that Montenegro stands at a critical crossroads. "What we are seeing is a struggle between pro-European forces and those aligned with a more traditional Serbian influence," he stated. The MEP pointed to the growing presence and influence of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro as indicative of this shift, warning that it could sway public sentiment away from EU aspirations.

He has called for Montenegrin leadership to recognize the precariousness of its situation, where the dual political discourse—publicly advocating EU integration while enabling pro-Serbian rhetoric—could jeopardize the country's progress toward membership. "If Montenegro chooses this path, we may find ourselves observing a Day of Remembrance for what was once an independent Montenegro," Sokol cautioned.

The EU's support for Montenegro hinges on the nation demonstrating a clear commitment to pro-European values and distancing itself from the Greater Serbian ideology. Sokol emphasized that while technical reforms are in progress, maintaining political stability and consensus on EU membership is essential to securing the support of EU member states.

As Montenegro aspires to join the EU by 2028, Sokol reiterated that achieving this goal is contingent upon establishing a strong, unequivocal European orientation. He noted that any actions perceived as contradicting this orientation could lead to individual EU countries blocking Montenegro's accession.

In light of these circumstances, Sokol urged Montenegrin officials to confront any attempts at political dominance from pro-Serbian factions firmly. His message serves as a wake-up call to the Montenegrin government to make decisive choices about its future, emphasizing that the road to EU membership requires clarity, courage, and commitment to European values.
