AGUSAN DEL NORTE, Philippines – In a significant blow to regional contraband networks, law enforcement officials successfully intercepted a massive shipment of smuggled cigarettes during a high-stakes operation in Agusan del Norte. The midnight bust resulted in the seizure of illicit goods valued at approximately ₱7 million and the apprehension of two key suspects.
The successful interception followed a period of intense surveillance and intelligence gathering by the Police Regional Office 13 (PRO-13). Acting on a tip regarding suspicious maritime activity, operatives moved in on a location where cargo was being unloaded from a pump boat under the cover of darkness.
Key assets seized during the midnight raid included a significant amount of contraband and transport equipment. Authorities recovered 155 cartons of illicit cigarettes, specifically 90 cartons of white Greenhills, 25 cartons of white Cannon, and 40 cartons of red Casablanca.
Two white vehicles—a Mitsubishi Canter truck and a Kia container van—suspected of being used for inland distribution were impounded. Additionally, two individuals found at the scene were taken into custody and are currently facing charges for violating the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).
This operation is part of a broader, intensified campaign directed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Customs to dismantle strategic transit hubs used for the illegal tobacco trade. Authorities have noted that such smuggling operations deprive the government of billions in tax revenue and pose significant health risks to consumers due to a lack of quality control.
"This operation sends a clear message to those engaged in illegal activities—the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with you," stated Police Brig. Gen. Marcial Mariano Magistrado IV, PRO-13 regional director, while commending the swift action of the tactical units.
Authorities are currently conducting follow-up operations to identify the financiers and masterminds behind the shipment, while simultaneously working to dismantle local distribution networks involved in the trade. These ongoing investigative efforts aim to trace the broader hierarchy of the smuggling operation and prevent future transit of illicit goods.
