Miracle in the Shadows: Newborn Abandoned and Rescued Outside Tigbauan Church

TIGBAUAN, ILOILO — A wave of shock and profound relief swept through the quiet town of Tigbauan early Friday morning. April 17, 2026 after a newborn baby was found abandoned just outside the doors of the local parish church. The infant, wrapped in only a thin, faded blanket, was discovered by a parishioner arriving for early morning prayers.

While the circumstances of the abandonment are heart-wrenching, local officials are calling the infant’s survival a "miracle" given the chilly overnight temperatures and the presence of stray animals in the area.

At approximately 4:45 a.m. local time, a devotee approaching the church steps heard a faint, rhythmic whimpering coming from a shadowed corner near the side entrance. Upon closer inspection, she discovered a small bundle placed inside a cardboard box.

"I thought it was a kitten at first," said the parishioner, who asked to remain anonymous. "But when I moved the blanket, I saw a tiny hand move. My heart stopped. He was so small and so quiet. I immediately called for the priest and the police."

Tigbauan emergency responders arrived within minutes and transported the infant to the nearest district hospital. Doctors confirmed that the baby is a male, likely only a few hours old at the time of discovery, as his umbilical cord was still crudely attached.

Despite the exposure, the infant is reported to be in stable condition with no signs of physical trauma or severe dehydration. He is currently being monitored in the neonatal ward, where the nursing staff has affectionately nicknamed him "Angel" as he continues his recovery.

The Tigbauan Police, in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), have launched an investigation to identify the mother or the persons responsible for leaving the child. Officers are currently reviewing CCTV footage from nearby establishments and the church’s perimeter.

"We are not here to judge," said a local police official. "We understand that someone may have been in a state of extreme desperation. However, our primary goal is to understand the family history for the child's medical records and to ensure the mother is also receiving the medical and psychological care she likely needs."

News of the "Church Baby" spread rapidly through the province, sparking an outpouring of support. By noon today, the local parish office had already received dozens of calls from citizens offering to donate diapers, formula, and clothing. Several families have even reached out to inquire about the legal process for adoption.

For now, the infant remains under the legal custody of the DSWD. If no biological relatives are identified within a specific timeframe, he will be placed in a licensed child-care facility before being cleared for the adoption roster.

The local priest offered a brief blessing during the morning mass, stating, "This child was left at the doorstep of a house of God. He was not truly abandoned; he was placed in our collective care. Today, this community is his family."
