UDHAMPUR, JAMMU AND KASHMIR – A horrific road accident has devastated a rural community in Jammu and Kashmir after a passenger bus skidded off a treacherous mountain road and rolled several hundred feet down a steep hillside. The disaster, which occurred on Monday morning, April 20, 2026 in the Udhampur district, has left 21 people dead and 29 others injured, many of whom remain in critical condition.

The bus, which was reportedly traveling from Surinsar to Udhampur, was negotiating a sharp hairpin bend in the Majalta area when the driver lost control. Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene as the vehicle veered off the narrow asphalt, somersaulting multiple times down the rocky embankment before coming to a rest in a deep ravine.

Local villagers were the first to reach the wreckage, using ropes and human chains to pull survivors from the mangled metal. They were soon joined by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police, who coordinated a massive evacuation effort.

Medical officials at the District Hospital in Udhampur confirmed that 14 passengers died instantly at the site, while seven others succumbed to their injuries during transport or shortly after arrival. The 29 survivors are being treated for various traumas, including head injuries and multiple fractures.

"The terrain made the rescue operation extremely difficult," said a senior police official at the scene. "We had to use cutters to reach those trapped inside the bus. The incline is so steep that even getting stretchers up to the road took a massive physical effort from our teams."

The Udhampur tragedy has sparked immediate calls for a safety audit of the region's hilly corridors. Preliminary reports suggest the bus may have been carrying passengers beyond its rated capacity, a common issue in rural transport.

Investigators are scrutinizing three critical factors: mechanical integrity, specifically potential brake failure common on long descents; road engineering, citing the absence of crash barriers or parapets on the fatal curve; and overloading, as authorities verify if excessive passenger weight compromised the vehicle's stability.

The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir expressed deep shock over the loss of lives and announced ex-gratia relief for the families of the deceased and the injured. He has directed the district administration to ensure that the best possible medical treatment is provided to the survivors, including airlifting the most critical cases to the Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu.
