Mountain Tragedy in Nan: Nine Dead, Including Four Children, as Pickup Truck Plunges Off Curve

NAN, THAILAND – A devastating road accident in the rugged highlands of Northern Thailand has claimed nine lives after a pickup truck carrying local villagers lost control on a notorious mountain bend. The tragedy, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, April 18, 2026 in the Pua District, has once again cast a spotlight on the treacherous nature of Nan’s high-altitude infrastructure.

The accident took place at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time on a steep, winding section of Highway 1081. Local police report that the pickup truck was transporting ten passengers from a nearby village when it failed to negotiate a sharp, descending curve. The vehicle skidded across the opposing lane, breached a low concrete barrier, and plunged nearly 50 meters into a wooded ravine.

Rescue teams from the Pua District arrived to find a scene of immense destruction. Of the ten people on board, nine were pronounced dead at the scene or shortly after arriving at Pua Hospital. Among the victims were four children, aged 8 to 15, who were reportedly returning from a weekend market trip with their families.

Initial findings by Nan Provincial Police suggest a combination of mechanical failure and environmental factors. Physical evidence at the site—including a lack of significant skid marks—indicates a potential failure of the vehicle's braking system, a common hazard on Nan’s long, steep descents where "brake fade" can occur due to overheating.

"This specific curve is known to locals as a 'danger zone' because of its tightening radius and steep decline," said a spokesperson for the Nan Highway Department. "When a vehicle is heavily loaded, the momentum on these grades requires pristine mechanical condition to manage safely."

The victims were all residents of a small upland community in the Bo Kluea area. Village elders described the loss as "unprecedented," noting that several families lost multiple members in the single crash. A communal funeral service is being organized as the province grapples with one of its deadliest road incidents of the year.

In the wake of the tragedy, local advocates are calling for immediate safety upgrades to the Pua-Bo Kluea mountain corridor.

To improve safety on Nan’s mountain passes, advocates are calling for runaway truck ramps to catch vehicles with brake failure, high-tension steel cable guardrails to absorb impact and prevent ravine plunges, and stricter weight enforcement to stop the dangerous overloading of modified pickups used as rural transport.
