Rachel Accurso, popularly known as Ms. Rachel, shared her deep concerns after speaking with children detained at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center. In a heartfelt video call, she encountered 9-year-old Deiver Henao Jimenez, who desperately lamented, “I don’t want to be here anymore.” He spoke of the harsh realities faced in the facility, including limited education and the persistent discomfort from moldy food.
Ms. Rachel, wearing her signature pink headband, empathized with the children during the call, attempting to comfort them while highlighting the alarming conditions they endure. Her conversations included discussions about their interests, revealing a poignant contrast between their ordinary childhood aspirations and their current predicament in detention.
She specifically recounted a distressing conversation with 5-year-old Gael, who had gone without a bowel movement for over nine days. "This is not normal," Accurso stated, underscoring the medical neglect the children face. The emotional toll of witnessing such suffering has prompted her to call for an end to the detention of children, labeling it "neglect and child abuse."
As a prominent figure in advocating for children's rights worldwide, Accurso has been vocal about the humanitarian crises affecting children, including those in Gaza and Sudan. Despite facing criticism, including allegations of antisemitism for her previous advocacy, she has decided to embrace her political stance, emphasizing that “children are worthy of love and care.”
In reflecting on her commitment, she stated, “If being political is what it takes to bring Gael home, or to get Deiver to his spelling bee, my conscience leaves me no other choice.” The situation at the Dilley facility has galvanized her efforts, aiming to raise awareness and ultimately close the center to protect vulnerable children from unjust treatment.
